If you research on watermelon, you will read that watermelons have known to be grown for around 5000 years. It is believed that this originated in Africa with the drought-tolerant and tough ancestors to our modern day watermelons. Watermelons are rich source of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and various other nutrients.
Watermelons belong to Cucurbitaceae plant family, which also contains other fruits such as cucumbers, zucchini, musk melon, etc. Fun fact – watermelons are also present in square shapes. According to wikipedia, square watermelon were invented in 1978 by a graphic designer named Tomoyuki Ono with sole purpose of fitting more compactly in a refrigerator and a fruit that could be cut without rolling.
